online dating — it’s a scary subject for millenials, or so i have noticed. though i have come across the few who do use online dating sites such as Okay Cupid, a majority of 20-somethings steer clear of using websites to find potential mates. my big question is what is holding them back? i asked around and talked to some millenials recently and they all claimed the same thing: online dating websites are reserved for when all hope is lost.
so, where did this stigma of online dating being a last resort for meeting someone come from? before we all met Match in 1995, we had Prodigy and AOL chatrooms but there wasn’t a place where online singles could browse through profiles of potential mates with such ease. it was a new concept, but by 1996 16 online dating sites were registered and it has not stopped growing since then. in the 90s 20-somethings were 0-somethings and the whole world of dating was gross and not intriguing at all. we grew up understanding that these sites were where old people (sorry, baby boomers) shared pictures and interests in hopes to find their soul mates so it’s easy to understand why millenials see online dating sites as a service you use once you’ve used up all other forms of meeting people and hit the bottom of the potential lovers barrel. we use the internet for everything else so why not to date?

how many millienials do you know who are looking for their wife/husband? i’m guessing not many. but what they fail to realize is online dating sites offer more than just the chance to meet your soulmate. there are people out there who want to casually date just like you do and guess what? it’s not easy for everyone to gracefully strike up conversations with the cuties at the bar. and what about those people who simply don’t like going to bars? guys, online dating sites are not complex or scary — they simply make that first step towards a date for you easier. after that, it’s up to you whether or not you want to pursue anything. no pressure. i think you millenials don’t fully realize your circle of friends gets smaller as you get older and the opportunities to meet new people decrease. everyone is just as nervous as you are about meeting new people but online dating can help smooth the process. take a second and think about how many dates you’ve been on this year. alright, now realize that if you were using something like How About We you might be doubling or ::gasp:: tripling that number. yeah, let that sink in for a bit.
hey, i’m not trying to sit here and tell you you’re a fool who is missing out on opportunities to meet awesome people. i’m just saying give it a chance. you might be pleasantly surprised.
P.S. if you’re still not convinced online dating has anything to offer someone like you, check this out. i promise, there’s a site for everyone.
